Black face sheep originated as mountain sheep in Scotland. Records show that in 1503, James IV of Scotland established a flock of 5,000 of them in Ettrick Forest.

The life expectancy of sheep is similar to large breeds of dogs—about 10 to 12 years.

Contrary to what was previously thought, sheep and other livestock are able to perceive color. However, their color vision is not as developed as that of humans, and they will sometimes react with fear to new colors.

Black face ewes are excellent mothers and will defend their offspring against any perceived threat.

The Scottish Blackface are excellent on brushy hillsides and can be useful for improving pastures.
