Fun Facts about Giraffes

Giraffes are the tallest land animal, reaching heights of 16-18 feet tall! Within the first year of life, babies will double in height.
No two giraffes have the same spot pattern! Identifying unique characteristics in their spots is a great way to recognize individuals when looking at a herd.
Female giraffes are pregnant for 14-15 months with the average weight of a baby being 125 pounds!
Giraffes will primarily sleep in short stretches of time while standing, totaling about 3 to 5 hours. During periods of rest, one giraffe will usually remain awake and vigilant for any potential threats.
Prehensile, or grasping, tongues that reach 18 inches long aid in their ability to grab leaves that are 19 feet above the ground!

Keeper Talks

Talk with the keepers who work with and take care of the tallest land animal at Busch Gardens. Visit the education tent located at the Serengeti Plain viewing area in the Edge of Africa pathway. Keeper talks will take place at 11:00am on Saturday and Sunday

Giraffe Encounter Tour

Join us for a 45-minute off-road expedition led by an expert Education Guide and an Animal Care Specialist and get the opportunity to hand feed our gentle giants. Don’t miss out on an experience to see the everyday care and training for the giraffes that call Busch Gardens Tampa Bay home!
