GORILLAS ON THE LINE

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is committed to conserving wildlife, and we partner with organizations all over the world to protect wildlife and their habitats. Two such species that we work to protect are Grauer's and mountain gorillas, which are native to Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

There are approximately 4,500 of these animals remaining in Africa. Their decline can be attributed to habitat loss due to mining for a valuable metal called coltan, which is used in many of our small electronic devices like cell phones. This year we are looking for groups to join our efforts to help gorillas in the wild by recycling old cell phones and decrease the demand for coltan.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is one of several zoos and aquariums across the continent taking part in the Gorillas on the Line campaign, who, in partnership with a company called Eco-Cell, is looking to collect 15,000 devices for recycling. If you are interested in getting your organization or classroom involved in our collection please fill out our “Gorillas On The Line” Request Form and we will send you more details

Registration is open until February 25th and we are encouraging participants to collect cell phones through May 1st; however, participants can set their own collection guidelines. Upon completing registration, we will send you additional information; including how and where collected cell phones will be sent to.

As a special thank you, Busch Garden Tampa’s Zoological Department will send each group a special print from the gorillas. The organization or school who collect the most cellphones to be recycled will receive a Skype session from the Busch Garden’s gorillas and animal care team. We hope you join us this year and answer the call to help save and protect gorillas.

Community Outreach Program

Please check back soon for more details for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Busch Gardens reaches beyond the park and into the Tampa Bay community with our outreach program. Busch Gardens Educators will bring live animals to your school for an exciting 30-minute presentation. Complete with an animal meet and greet and a Q&A with our educators, our outreaches will keep students of all ages engaged and entertained!

We travel throughout the Tampa Bay Metro Area and present to school students of all ages. Presentations are designed to fit within your class periods, or can be conducted on your school stage/multipurpose space (up to 250 participants per session). Teachers can select from four, standards-based and grade appropriate topics. Sessions are held on select Mondays during the school year and are available for the morning only.

Outreaches are facilitated at schools only. We do not provide outreaches for private residences. Please note that due to the high demand for these sessions, not all outreach requests can be accommodated.

Please check back soon for more details for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Classrooms across the nation are invited to take a walk on the wild side with us through our Interactive Live Video Call program. Students now have an opportunity to spend 30 minutes of face time over a live video call directly with our Busch Gardens Education Experts to learn about the fascinating animals that call Busch Gardens Tampa home.

Teachers can select from four, standards-based and grade appropriate topics. Sessions are held on select Mondays during the school year. Following the interactive demonstration, the floor is open for students to ask any questions they may have. Our goal for these sessions is to inspire students to conserve and protect wildlife and wild places. Please note that due to the high demand for these sessions, not all requests can be accommodated.
